SIGGRAPH 2021 Student Team Leaders Announcement

While the SIGGRAPH 2021 virtual conference continues to develop for the virtual conference this August, the Student Volunteers Program is honored to announce the team leaders group of student volunteers to help provide operational support to the conference. SIGGRAPH Team Leaders are selected based on their past experience as a Student Volunteer at SIGGRAPH and/or a SIGGRAPH Asia conference, their demonstrated leadership experience, and their ability to clearly communicate their motivation to lead others.

I am a 3D modeler and texturer who recently graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. I’ve known I wanted to be working in either animated movies or video games since I was in fifth grade. Outside of work I enjoy gaming with friends, volunteering with my archery group, and learning about as many topics as I can.

Call for Nominations for ACM SIGGRAPH Membership Chair

The Membership Committee is a new committee established to better serve the needs of our membership and our volunteers. It coordinates all ACM SIGGRAPH activities designed to benefit our members and explores new ways to enhance the value of membership. The Membership Committee will include representatives from the other Standing Committees and facilitate communication between the membership and the different parts of ACM SIGGRAPH. It should investigate, identify, and recommend to the EC better ways to recruit, retain, and support members and volunteers and to ensure responsiveness, inclusiveness, and diversity. It shall work with the ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee to define member benefits and membership rates. It is in charge of the SIGGRAPH Village, both at the SIGGRAPH and SIGGRAPH Asia Conferences and year-round.

The Membership Committee Chair will recruit and lead a committee to accomplish the above goals. The Chair should contact the other Standing Committee Chairs and ask them to designate representatives to serve on the Membership Committee.

Some of the issues the committee should address include the following:

  • Explores and proposes new Membership benefits.
  • Works with the Communications Committee to engage with our membership.
  • Develops and distributes a Membership Welcome Packet that includes a clearly designed, accessible, and useful guide that explains the activities of ACM SIGGRAPH including roles and responsibilities of each leadership role and committee. 
  • Provides a point of contact for membership and member questions. 
  • Provides a point of contact for questions related to volunteering and contributing to ACM SIGGRAPH.

The Chair must submit a budget request to the Executive Committee every January and submit an annual report in June. The Chair can expect to spend 5 or more hours/week on the chair activities.

Provide a CV and vision statement (why you’re interested in being chair and what you hope to accomplish in this volunteer role). The deadline for applying is February 1, 2021 but applications will be accepted until the position is filled and the term will begin as soon as possible. The term is three years, renewable in September.

A Conversation With… is a series of chats focused on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques, within a small group of people. These conversations are intended to be casual, intriguing, informative and interactive sessions that enable attendees that sign up to take part in the conversation. The sessions are intentionally limited to be around 8-10 people to make the conversation more personal. Our speaker list includes renowned academics, pioneers, practitioners, artists, animators, designers and anyone that is part of our SIGGRAPH community. So whom would you like to have a conversation with … ?

The sessions are on 4th and 5th December, 2020 and are spread across 4 time zones.

Volunteering for SIGGRAPH Webinars

The Webinars and Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee are in search of volunteers to assist in the hosting and moderation of webinars held throughout the year. As the events will include speakers from around the globe, the live session times will vary depending on the central location to make hosting as convenient as possible for the volunteers and speakers alike. This position can be low commitment and prioritizes finding a geographically diverse group of volunteers.

Webinar Assistant Director: This individual will shadow the Webinar Director in coordinating with continent directors in African, South America, Europe, Asia, Middle East, and Australia/New Zealand to make sure a consistent schedule of year-round webinars are happening. Other responsibilities also include brainstorming future webinar sessions and improving efficiencies with the webinars with technical support.

DEI Main Scheduling Coordinator: This individual will coordinate with each of the speakers in a session to identify the best time for an event. They will additionally identify the regional volunteers best suited to handle each particular session. The Scheduling Coordinator will work closely with the Communications Lead to ensure that any time conflicts are flagged and communicated to the rest of the team, volunteers, and speakers.

DEI Communications Lead: This individual manages all internal-facing communications for the SIGGRAPH Webinars Team. The Communications Lead acts as the first point of contact for the volunteers and speakers that do not need to be handled directly by the Chair or Industry Lead. They will work closely with the Graphic Designer and Regional Copywriter Volunteers to compile the marketing materials for each session. As well, the Communications Lead is responsible for handling all incoming communications with personalized, professional, and excellent customer service.


North America:
Comment Moderator: Reads through all of the live comments as they arrive. The role is to remove objectionable content in real-time, banning abusive participants and keeping the content of the comments in line with ACM’s policies on harassment. This person also identifies the questions coming in for the speakers and communicates the most interesting of these to both the MC and the Director to prepare for the Q&A at the end of the live session.

Master/Mistress of Ceremonies: Introduces the speakers and overall introduction to the live session, explaining the rules of engagement (respect of ACM policies), and stating the objectives of the series. At the end of the presentation, they will lead the Q&A closing remarks.

Technical Producer: Handles the mechanics of live the stream, currently operating through Be.Live. This involves deciding what content is visible at what time and managing everything that is seen by the public. They have the ability to post text summarizing the topic being discussed, what question is being addressed, or showing who asked the question. They also terminate the live stream at the end of the event. This role requires the most training in order to use the Be.Live software.

Call for Nominations for ACM SIGGRAPH Communications Chair

The Communications Committee ​manages ACM SIGGRAPH’s digital presence through the recommendation, design, and implementation of the organization’s communication channels. These communications serve ACM SIGGRAPH members and constituents providing them with information and support while amplifying the talents and achievements of our members. The Communication Committee Works with the ACM SIGGRAPH Executive Committee to realize and share strategic initiatives and meet marketing and visibility goals. 

The Communications Committee has recently restructured to better reflect the needs of ACM SIGGRAPH. The incoming Communications Committee Chair will be responsible for implementing best practices and industry standard communications in many formats and platforms based on this restructuring. The Chair will lead, identify, and manage a committee of five volunteers and three contractors filling the roles of External Programming Chair, Social Media Manager, Member Profiles Editor, Video Manager, Frontiers Newsletter Manager, Video Editor, PR Consultant, and Content Manager. A majority of these roles are currently filled.
