Companies like Industrial Light & Magic have found success by understanding the importance of blending creative and scientific thinking, and developing good management practices for both. While technical and artistic might seem to be intrinsically separate processes, in visual effects they are highly dependent on each other to put the most realistic imagery on the screen. Using examples from "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," "Transformers," and "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe," this talk takes an in-depth look at the challenges each show faced and details how ILM blends left-brain and right-brain thinking to overcome them.

Jeff White joined Industrial Light & Magic in 2002 as a Creature Technical Director. He is a graduate of Ithaca College's Cinema and Photography program and has a Masters of Fine Arts from the Savannah College of Art and Design. Prior to graduate school, he worked as technical director for Laika Studios in Portland, Oregon. Since arriving at ILM, he has worked as a Creature Technical Director on "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest," "Lemony Snicket: A Series of Unfortunate Events," "War of the Worlds," and "Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith." His responsibilities on these shows included rigging and enveloping a wide variety of creatures running flesh, cloth, hair, and muscle simulations. On "Transformers," the blockbuster film nominated for the Best Visual Effects Oscar, he served as the Digital Production Supervisor. Currently, he is the Associate Visual Effects Supervisor for the sequel to that film, "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen."
