Play is one of the simple pleasures in life. From birth to death there is nothing so enjoyable as spending a few moments in play. Stress melts away, laughter flows and magic memories are made.
Whether with a hoop and a stick, or a multi-million dollar boat, people have always used technology to enable themselves to play in new and exciting ways. In the modern world, with all of its complexities we need play more than ever before.
At SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 we are looking for submissions to E-Tech that use technology to show new forms of play.
Feel free to submit even if your work is not covered by the above list. If it is new, cool, and exciting, we want to see it at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011!
The main form of presentation at Emerging Technologies is a live, working, hands-on demonstration. It is essential that your work can be effectively demonstrated by the time the conference opens in December. To ensure this, the submission process requires all submitters to provide extensive technical, logistical, and practical documentation. Running an Emerging Technologies demo is hard work, but it is also very rewarding. Your work will be experienced by thousands of people and widely reported in media. We invite submissions from academic institutions as well as corporations and individuals. All submissions will be reviewed by experts in relevant fields, and the final selections will be made by a jury. In addition to submitted works, a portion of the exhibition will be curated; please contact the Emerging Technologies Chair if you have suggestions for curated works. Juried and curated works will be clearly distinguished in the conference program.
Accepted Emerging Technologies works will be presented as on-going demonstrations throughout SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 in Hong Kong. Technical support will be provided to make the most of each demo. If your work is accepted, you will have the opportunity to give a technical presentation, advertised in the conference program. Press tours and other media outreach will be organized to further increase awareness and publicity. A promotional video will be widely distributed, and a description of each exhibit will be published online and in a printed catalog for SIGGRAPH Asia 2011.
The submission deadline is 7 June, 23:59 UTC/GMT. The jury's decisions will be announced in early August. We look forward to seeing your submission for SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Emerging Technologies!
VERY IMPORTANT: Before you prepare a proposal to Emerging Technologies, review the requirements that you must meet if your proposal is accepted.
Use these instructions to ensure that your submission is complete and that it meets all applicable program requirements: Emerging Technologies proposals must be submitted electronically via the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 online submission system. No other method of submission will be accepted. Fax submissions are not accepted. Only the files and supporting material uploaded through the submission system will be considered for review.
Begin by starting a new submission in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Online Submission Form choosing Emerging Technologies. When you begin the form, your submission will be assigned a submission identification (ID) number that will be used to identify your submission throughout the review process. You can modify the form up until the deadline. If required information is missing, your form will be marked Incomplete. Incomplete submissions will not be accepted. The form is divided into five sections:
Submission Form
This is where you give a detailed text description of your installation. The fields are: Category/technology: How would you best categorize your piece or the technology it uses? Choose one existing keyword from the supplied list, or submit your own.
Executive summary (50 words or less): A brief one- or two-sentence summary that you could use to concisely explain your project's innovation to the hundreds of people you will meet each day at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011.
Give an overview of the goals of your project and its innovations, and how it will affect our lives in the future (maximum 300 words): a concise description of what your project is all about and why it is significant. This text should be a stand-alone description of the project, suitable for publication. It will be used for online publicity and the printed catalog.
What are the core technical innovations of the work? Describe your project's technical innovations in significant depth. What have you developed? What are the critical pieces that you designed? Is it new technology or a creative use of existing technology?
Describe the experience for SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 attendees: What are the logistics for presenting this project in Emerging Technologies? Remember that this is a hands-on exhibition. You must convince the jury that the work is viable at the time of submission and can withstand the abuse of thousands of SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 attendees. Give a detailed description of what a participant will experience. How many people can participate at one time? How long is the experience? Is throughput going to be a problem? How long will you need for setup? How much space will you need? What technical infrastructure must be in place to support this project? How many people will it take in the booth to explain your presentation? Note that you will also submit a floor plan with detailed layout.
Place your work in context: How does this work expand on prior work? How is this approach different from what has been previously attempted? What are the advantages and disadvantages of your approach? Make sure to include references to previous work, including your own.
References: Provide a full list of relevant previously published works by yourself and others.
Has this work appeared or been submitted elsewhere? Indicate whether this work has been presented, published, or submitted elsewhere. This includes work that is closely derivative of other work or techniques. If so, please give details.
Project URL: If your project has a public web page which you would like to make available to the reviewers, include the URL here.
Submission and Authorization Agreement All submitters must complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement (formerly the Acceptance Agreement) before the submission deadline. Incomplete submissions will not be reviewed or accepted.
You must review your permissions (part of your original online submission form) and complete the Submission and Authorization Agreement by entering an electronic signature before the submission deadline. You can already peruse and sign the agreement during the submission process. We strongly recommend this. If you do not complete your Submission and Authorization Agreement with an electronic signature, your work cannot be presented at SIGGRAPH Asia 2011.
The Submission and Authorization Agreement is a legal document. It explains the uses SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 makes of presented material and requires you to acknowledge that you have permission to use this material. This may involve seeking clearance from your employer or from others who have loaned you material, such as videotapes and slides. The agreement helps prevent situations whereby SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 presentations include material without permission that might lead to complaints or even legal action. In addition, this agreement asks if ACM SIGGRAPH may use your materials for conference and organization promotional material in exchange for full author/artist credit information.
For a better understanding of the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Submission and Authorization Agreement please review the Submission and Authorization Agreement Explanation.
Manage Files
Here, you can upload files that complement your submission, including diagrams, images and video. This includes:
Mandatory Files:
Optional Files
- Supplemental video, maximum five minutes: Maximum 100 MB. The best way to communicate an interactive installation is through video. We strongly encourage all Emerging Technologies submitters to provide a video with English narration and/or text that explains the main points of their submissions. Make sure to test your video on a variety of different operating systems and media players before submitting it! Allowed formats: QuickTime, AVI, Windows Media.
Technical Requirements
On this page, you give detailed information about your needs for networking, electricity, set-up time, and other resources for a successful Emerging Technologies exhibit.
Manage Contributors
On this page you can manage the list of contributors to your submission and their affiliations. OPTIONAL: Non-native English speakers may use the English Review Service to help with text of submissions. Please note that this takes time, so your submission must be submitted to the English Review Service well in advance of the published deadline. Make sure to indicate your request by ticking the appropriate checkbox in the submission form.
Review Process
SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Emerging Technologies is both a juried and a curated exhibition. All submissions to Emerging Technologies will be reviewed by a team of industry, research, and academic professionals in the fields of display systems, computing, entertainment, design, systems engineering, interface devices, art, and related fields. Some works will also be curated outside the jury process, at the chair's prerogative. If your work is not accepted, that is not a reflection on its quality. Because of space limitations, we are able to accept only a limited number of pieces.
Notification
Submissions will be reviewed soon after the submission deadline. Notification of acceptance or rejection will be sent via email in August.

At the Conference
The main form of presentation in Emerging Technologies is a live demonstration, which will be available throughout the conference. You are responsible to keep your exhibit manned during all opening hours of the Emerging Technologies area. This is hard work, and over several days there will be thousands of people passing through your exhibit. Therefore, before submitting, make sure that you will have the resources to send sufficient staff to SIGGRAPH Asia 2011. We recommend at minimum two people, but four or even more could be needed depending on the nature of your work. To facilitate this, SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 provides up to four conference passes free of charge for each accepted Emerging Technologies exhibit. See the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Recognition Policy for more details.
You will also have the opportunity to give a talk in the technical program, where you can explain your work in greater detail than is possible in a demo situation. Details on this presentation will be included in the acceptance letter.
Publication
All accepted work will be documented in the SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 web site and printed catalog, and in the Full Conference DVD-ROM.
Logistics
We will work closely with you to insure proper and effective installation of your work. In general, accepted researchers are responsible for bringing or shipping their work to SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 in Hong Kong. Contributors are also responsible for return shipping after the conference.
You are expected to bring sufficient personnel to staff the demo throughout the conference. SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 may be able to provide some student volunteer support.
If your work arrives at the conference center, and it is not as depicted in your submission or is not ready for installation, we reserve the right to exclude it from the exhibition. You must also promptly complete and return:

Equipment Rental Form
Networking Form
Insurance Form

Other Details
You will be able to update your basic submission information so that it can be included in the conference program and web site. This information needs to be finalized two weeks after acceptance.
For attending SIGGRAPH Asia 2011, registration and travel costs are at your own expense, except for the contributor of record, who will receive recognition as specified in the SIGGRAPH SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 Recognition Policy.
1. Will SIGGRAPH Asia 2011 pay for shipping my work?
No. If your work is accepted, you are responsible for crating, shipping, and insurance.
2. Should I send video documentation of my piece?
Yes, if at all possible. Video documentation is highly recommended. Time-based documentation is the best way to illustrate how conference attendees will actually experience your project. We may also use the video in publicity for Emerging Technologies.
3. May I submit my unfinished work as a "work in progress" if it is not complete by the submission deadline?
A work in progress may be submitted if it represents a large portion of the final version. Please explain in detail what additions will be made prior to the installation. You will need to convince the jury that your work will be ready for exhibition in time for the conference.
4. I'm having trouble uploading the high-resolution digital image required for online submission. What should I do?
If, due to bandwidth restrictions, you cannot upload a high-resolution image or supplemental movies, please instead upload a lower-resolution version. If we need to include a higher-resolution version for jury review or publication stills, we will contact you to make arrangements.
5. My email address will be changing soon. How can I notify you of the update?
You will be able to change your email address in the online submission system.
6. I've completed the online submission forms, but the system still allows me to edit my account. Am I done?
Yes. But you are allowed to edit your online submission account until the deadline: 6 June, 23:59 UTC/GMT.
7. Can I submit a paper, sketch, poster, or other work in addition to my Emerging Technologies proposal? Can I submit an Emerging Technologies proposal if the work has already been presented at a previous SIGGRAPH conference?
Yes. For instance, you might want to submit a sketch that details a particular technical aspect of your exhibit, or you could submit a demonstration based on a paper published at a previous SIGGRAPH conference. Be sure to list these related submissions in your proposal and make clear how your Emerging Technologies proposal expands on and is different from these.
8. If I don't need to ship my equipment, and I can carry it in with me, do I need to provide shipping documents?
If you want to carry your equipment into the convention center, please contact the Emerging Technologies Chair for detailed information on how to make appropriate arrangements.
