More than what the Eye Sees: Interaction and Graphics
As the glitz and glamour of the animations and images populate the Electronic Theatre, it is easy to forget that SIGGRAPH stands for, “The ACM Special Interest Group on Computer Graphics and Interactive Techniques”. Before SIGCHI and other forums matured, SIGGRAPH was where one went to present and see the most innovative interaction, graphics, and techniques. But the emphasis has changed, as graphics and interaction have both matured.
As the fields become more specialized, it can be argued that this is all for good reason – and that may be true. However, in retrospect, is this reason good enough?
In this talk, we will look back and forward, use examples to illustrate how rich the combined history of interaction and graphics is, as well as the potential and need to reconsider the existing balance between the two in the future.
